On October 8, 2025, the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the first leadership lecture by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Engineering Hydrology at the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU), Vitaly Aleksandrovich Khaustov. The topic of the lecture was “Stochastic Models of Runoff Formation.”

In his lecture, Vitaly Aleksandrovich thoroughly discussed the stochastic approach to modeling hydrological processes, explained the principles of building mathematical models of river runoff formation, and examined the influence of climatic and anthropogenic factors on the stability of hydrological characteristics.

The audience showed great interest in practical examples from research conducted at RSHU, as well as in joint projects developed with the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of KazNU.

“Modern stochastic models not only help us understand the patterns of runoff formation more deeply but also allow more accurate forecasting of water resources under changing climate conditions,” emphasized Vitaly Aleksandrovich.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of KazNU has been collaborating for several years with RSHU and personally with V. A. Khaustov on joint scientific projects dedicated to stochastic modeling, the stability of water systems, and rational water use. This exchange of experience between the universities strengthens scientific ties and contributes to the training of young specialists of international level.

The first lecture marked the beginning of a series of academic meetings that will continue at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management. In the upcoming lectures, Vitaly Aleksandrovich will share the latest research results of the Russian school of engineering hydrology, present modern methods for water resource analysis, and approaches to runoff forecasting under climate change conditions.

The Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management and the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology express their gratitude to Vitaly Aleksandrovich Khaustov for his cooperation and the high scientific quality of his presentation, and they invite students and faculty members to attend the upcoming lectures.

This series of lectures aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation” and SDG 13 “Climate Action.” The study of stochastic models and modern hydrological methods contributes to the rational management of water resources, reduction of climate-related risks, and enhancement of ecosystem resilience. Such scientific and educational initiatives improve the environmental and engineering literacy of young people, strengthen academic cooperation, and contribute to the achievement of global sustainable development goals.
