On 9 September 2024, the faculty of the Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) held a meeting with representatives of the Almaty office of the Beijing law firm “Beijing Guantao Law Firm Almaty Office.”
At the meeting, the parties discussed current issues in customs, financial and environmental law; considered establishing cooperation on joint research projects, updating academic programs, and providing students with practical training placements. The guests shared their experience regarding legal risks in cross-border trade, international arbitration, enforcement mechanisms, as well as practical aspects of implementing ESG standards and environmental compliance. The department’s faculty proposed jointly developing syllabi for elective courses on the digitalization of customs law, financial monitoring (AML/CFT), and the legal foundations of “green” finance.
Following the meeting, the parties reached preliminary agreements to organize short-term and long-term internships for KazNU students at the Beijing Guantao Law Firm Almaty Office, to conduct regular series of guest lectures and workshops featuring practicing lawyers, and to implement joint educational activities in the format of a mock trial/moot court. The parties expressed their intention to create a working group on academic mobility, joint publications, and the analysis of real cases within the legal clinic, as well as to prepare a cooperation “roadmap.” The meeting was held in a warm atmosphere; both sides expressed confidence that future joint projects would give fresh impetus to the professional development of young people and improve the quality of legal practice in the region.
A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law of the Faculty of Law and the Almaty office of the Beijing law firm “Beijing Guantao Law Firm”.
