16 october, 2025

On October 16, 2025, M.S. Ongarbaeva, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, Faculty of Philology, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, together with  the third-year students majoring in  “6B02303 – Foreign Philology (Western Languages)” and IT specialists from the International Information Technology University (IITU, Almaty), held an event dedicated to the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems and the responsibility of future generations.

The event focused on Sustainable Development Goal 15 how modern IT technologies can contribute to protecting the environment and preserving terrestrial ecosystems.

Students identified key tasks of SDG 15, such as combating deforestation, land degradation, and preserving biodiversity; the impact of human activities on terrestrial ecosystems; and the role of IT specialists and digital solutions in monitoring and protecting nature. Special attention was given to practical approaches where digital technologies can help for example, satellite monitoring of deforestation, drone use for natural area surveillance, apps and platforms for environmental education and volunteering, and databases for tracking endangered species and natural resources.

Students showed great interest and proposed their own ideas for applying IT in the environmental field — from developing mobile applications to educational initiatives aimed at raising ecological awareness.

The event also covered Kazakhstan’s policies on implementing the SDGs, including national programs and projects aimed at combating desertification, developing forestry, and introducing innovative nature conservation technologies. This event fostered environmental responsibility and technological competence among students and emphasized the importance of collaboration between humanities and technical fields to achieve sustainable development.
