The Idea of Independence in Early 20th-Century Kazakh Literature

On October 21, 2025, with the participation of the teaching staff of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and researchers from the Institute for the Development of the State Language, a scientific-practical round table discussion on the topic: “The Idea of Independence in Early 20th-Century Literature”dedicated to Republic Day was held. 

The round table discussion participants were the  Director of the Institute for the Development of the State Language, Candidate of Philological Sciences B. Kapalbek; Professor of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Doctor of Philological Sciences O. Abdimanuly; Associate Professor of the A. Kussainov Eurasian Humanities Institute, Candidate of Philological Sciences L. Daurenbekova; Research Fellow of the National Translation Bureau, Candidate of Philological Sciences, PhD (University of Aberdeen) G. Tusipova; Director of the Akhmet Baitursynuly House-Museum R. Imakhanbet; Senior Lecturer of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Candidate of Philological Sciences E. Soltanaeva; Senior Lecturer of the same university Sh. Shortanbai; PhD student of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University K. Medet, and other participants who presented their reports.

The purpose of the event  was to examine the formation and  the development of the  ideas of independence in the works by  Alaşh movement figures of the early 20th century, as well as their reflection in literature.

 The participants of the round table discussion  highlighted the influence of the historical and social conditions of that period on the development of the national literary process. The presentations covered topics such as the ideology of Abai and the Alaşh movement, political values in the works of Alaş writers, and the distinctive features of how the idea of independence was represented in the works of individual figures. Master’s degree  students of the Faculty of Philology, invited to the event, actively participated in the discussions and asked questions to the speakers.
