Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences Strengthens International Cooperation with the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Representatives of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have successfully completed their scientific visit to the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Urumqi, Xinjiang, PRC), held from 15 to 21 November 2025. The visit was organized at the official invitation of the host institution and aimed at enhancing international collaboration in climatology, hydrology, and the ecology of arid regions.

During the visit, meetings were conducted with various research divisions of the Institute, where the following topics were discussed:

• prospects for joint research on climate change and water resources;
• approaches to assessing the resilience of arid and semi-arid ecosystems;
• modern methods of processing Earth observation data and integrating GIS technologies into environmental monitoring;
• opportunities for implementing international scientific projects and exchanging research expertise.

Discussions also covered joint grant initiatives, research internships, academic exchange programs, and broader scientific cooperation between the institutions. Special attention was given to the development of collaboration areas aligned with SDG 17 – “Partnerships for the Goals”, aimed at strengthening institutional and scientific linkages between countries.

The visit contributed to establishing strong academic connections and laid the foundation for long-term cooperation in natural resource management, climate process monitoring, and the development of innovative approaches to reducing environmental risks. Both sides expressed interest in continuing joint research, preparing scientific publications, and implementing educational and research programs.
