A Republican Conference on Publishing in the Context of Digitalization Held at Al-Farabi KazNU
On November 14, 2025, the Faculty of Journalism of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a republican scientific and methodological conference titled “Publishing and Book Studies in the Era of Digitalization: Contemporary Trends and Future Development Prospects.” The event brought together experts in national science and culture, publishing professionals, faculty members, and students.
The conference coincided with the 75th anniversary of the renowned publisher, scholar, and educator Qongyr Mukataikyzy. Her contribution to the development of publishing culture became a central theme of the event. She was especially recognized as the leader who introduced international standard book numbering systems (ISBN, ISSN, CIP) in Kazakhstan.
The plenary session was opened by Bauyrzhan Zhakyp, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, poet, and Doctor of Philological Sciences. In his address, he provided an in-depth overview of the stages in the formation of Kazakh book studies, the historical development of publishing, and the importance of standard numbering systems.
Talghat Kumarghaliuly, Chairman of the “Parasat” Trade Union of KazNU, then spoke about the role of the publishing industry in the country’s cultural life and emphasized the social responsibility of the journalism profession. On behalf of the University Rector, Zhanseit Kanseituly, he read out a jubilee congratulatory message and presented Qongyr Mukataikyzy with the Silver Medal of KazNU.
Aigul Amirgaliqyzy, Head of the Department of Publishing, Editorial, and Design Arts, delivered an informative report on the transformation of modern publishing processes, the development of electronic content, and the future of online publishing. She noted that by introducing international standards, Qongyr Mukataikyzy paved the way for Kazakh books to enter the global circulation.
Honored Artist of Kazakhstan and State Prize laureate Aidos Zhumadilda, who attended the conference, spoke about the creative connection between culture and publishing, sharing examples from his professional experience with students.
During the conference, students gained comprehensive knowledge about the internal structure of publishing, the demands of the digital era, and the professional stages of book production, while also engaging in open discussions with industry specialists. The event served as a practice-oriented educational platform rich in real-world experience for the younger generation.
Tolkyn Turgaliqyzy, Deputy Director of the National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan, emphasized the need to study issues related to the financing of domestic publishing and proposed the preparation of a specialized research work in this area. According to experts, such research would help improve the economic model of the industry.
In conclusion, the conference held at KazNU became a significant event that enabled a comprehensive discussion of pressing issues in publishing and book studies in the context of digitalization, while strengthening professional ties between specialists and students. The academic exchange, honoring of the юбиляр, and sharing of experience represented a valuable step toward the development of national publishing culture.
