In the city of Talgar, UNESCO, in cooperation with the Center for Sustainable Development, and with the participation of the academic staff of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, conducted a training workshop for students of D.A. Kunayev College aimed at developing safe behavior and response skills in emergency situations.

More than 50 students took part in the event and gained a systematic understanding of the most common types of natural and man-made emergencies typical for Kazakhstan, as well as the basic principles of individual and collective safety.

The substantive part of the training was delivered by experts in hydrology, risk management, and sustainable development. Ainur Mussina, Associate Researcher at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, provided a detailed overview of the main types of emergencies in the Republic of Kazakhstan, their formation mechanisms and potential impacts, as well as response and prevention measures at the levels of legislation, engineering infrastructure, and the civil protection system. Special attention was paid to the role of educational institutions and youth in fostering a culture of safety and reducing societal vulnerability to risks.

The training contributed to increasing students’ awareness of contemporary safety challenges, enhancing practical emergency response skills, and strengthening cooperation between international organizations, the university community, and regional educational institutions. The event also contributed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 “Quality Education,” SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” and SDG 13 “Climate Action.”
