8 january, 2026

Solar panels are installed on the roofs of a number of academic buildings of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

During the modernization, worn-out old roofing was completely dismantled, leveling work was carried out in accordance with construction requirements. Construction debris was removed and roofing material was laid. Updated drainage systems have been installed, and protection from precipitation has been strengthened.

The main thing is that the project worth about 1 billion tenge was implemented with the support of an investor without burdening the university budget.

By the end of 2024, the university's electricity consumption amounted to 9.17 million kWh. At the same time, 1,390 solar panels with a total capacity of 994 kW annually generate 3.39 million kW/h of electricity, which can provide about 35% of the Treasury's electricity needs. In addition, thanks to solar panels placed on an area of 20 thousand square meters, the university annually saves over 111 million tenge.

To date, the buildings of the Higher School of Economics and Business, the faculties of Journalism, Law, History, Geography and Environmental Management, biology and Biotechnology, philology, medicine and healthcare, as well as a number of student dormitories have been equipped with solar panels.

According to experts, taking into account the service life of the equipment, the cumulative economic effect of the project over 20 years after the payback period will exceed 2 billion tenge, which indicates its long-term and economic efficiency.

Every year, scientific centers and laboratories are actively opened on the basis of the university. According to forecasts, by 2030, KazNU's demand for electricity will double and exceed 18 million kW/h. In this regard, part of the educational institution's electricity needs will be provided by alternative sources solar panels.

This will allow students and staff to use stable and environmentally friendly energy, as well as strengthen the university's innovative image.

According to the plans, in the future, all faculties and dormitories of the KazNU campus will be gradually provided with solar panels.
