Scientific research into freshwater ecosystems in Karatau: successful dissertation defense

On November 14, 2025, the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the successful defense of Gulmira Saifullayevna Ibrayeva's dissertation on the topic: "Assessment of the current state of the ichthyofauna of the rivers of the southwestern Karatau macroscline", submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the educational program "8D08401 – Fish Industry and Industrial Fishery".

The dissertation work was carried out within the framework of the scientific project IRN AP26100721 "Study of the taxonomic and functional diversity of the Alatau ichthyofauna", approved by the Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The data obtained expand modern understanding of the state of freshwater ecosystems in the region and form the scientific basis for monitoring, conservation of the fish gene pool, and the development of measures for sustainable management of aquatic biological resources. The results of the dissertation research are aimed at achieving the goals of sustainable development, including training highly qualified scientific personnel (SDG 4), preserving the quality of freshwater ecosystems (SDG 6), sustainable use of aquatic biological resources (SDG 14), and protecting the biodiversity of inland waters (SDG 15).
