The Department of Chinese Studies held a scientific seminar on «Unintended Consequences: The Downside of Lexical Borrowing»

On February 11, 2026, the Department of Chinese Studies of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a scientific seminar on «Unintended Consequences: The Downside of Lexical Borrowing».  The event was organized by the Department of Chinese Studies as part of the research project of third-year doctoral student Raissa Pak, majoring in Foreign Philology (Oriental Languages).

The following topics were discussed at the scientific seminar:

• Lexical borrowings in Kazakh, Chinese, and Russian,

• Problems of translating borrowings,

• Unintended consequences of borrowings: the downside of lexical borrowing

During the seminar, participants learned about various aspects of how borrowings influence the Chinese language and culture. A discussion was held with the participation of department faculty and doctoral students, and following the seminar, a decision was made to continue research in this area.
