Expanding Visual Literacy: First-Year Students in the World of Contemporary Art

15 february, 2026

For a designer and publisher, it is not enough to simply know how to work with software — it is also important to feel color, shape, and composition. First-year students of the Department of Publishing, Editing, and Design Arts visited the Almaty Museum of Contemporary Art to seek inspiration.

We learned to read the meanings hidden behind abstractions and installations.

What were we looking for in the museum halls?

Color solutions — combinations that can be applied in cover design.
Typographic compositions — how text becomes part of a work of art.
Bold ideas — innovations that break the patterns of classical book publishing.

Makpal Khalelovna helped us view the exhibits through the eyes of professionals. Art is the best teacher for those who create visual content!
