Codicological Features of Medieval Manuscripts of Central Asia

19 february, 2026

On February 17, 2026, a second-year PhD student of the Oriental Studies program at the Department of Turkology and History of the East, N.D. Sultanbayeva, held an online research seminar. The topic of the seminar was “Codicological Characteristics of Medieval Manuscripts of Central Asia.”

During the seminar, the doctoral student presented her research focus and highlighted the importance of codicology and paleography in manuscript studies. It was emphasized that, in addition to the textual content, the external physical features of a manuscript serve as an important source of historical information. In particular, the main structural elements of manuscripts — bindings, paper, and types of ink — were described based on scholarly research.

The seminar was conducted at a high academic level and attracted considerable interest. Faculty members of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and doctoral students interested in the topic took part in the event. The session concluded with a Q&A and an academic discussion.
