Second Life: Restoration of Outdated Geographical Maps and Atlases

The Department organized an educational and practical Event" Second Life". The main goal of the event is to preserve the scientific and educational and methodological value of outdated geographical maps and atlases by restoring them, as well as to increase students ' interest in the field of cartography.
During the event, the participants got acquainted with modern and traditional methods of restoring cartographic materials that have become obsolete over time. In particular, experimental work was carried out on the requirements of strengthening paper, restoration of torn parts, surface cleaning, lamination and proper storage.

The event allowed students not only to deepen their theoretical knowledge, but also to understand the importance of careful attitude to historical and geographical heritage. In addition, the importance of old atlases and maps as scientific sources, their role in the reflection of the political, economic and natural features of a particular period were emphasized.
