Heads of departments have mastered new management mechanisms
The days of the expert-strategic session "Academic management and quality of education: intensive for managers and teachers" continue at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The large–scale event, organized within the framework of PROFESSIONAL WEEK - 2026, is aimed at improving the quality of management in the university structure to a new level. An important component of this week at the Farabi Library was the expert-practical working panel "Strategy, ratings, responsibility: the role of the department in managing scientific activities".
This area is devoted to the systematization of strategic planning at the departmental level. The deputy deans of faculties and heads of departments have mastered the mechanisms for distributing the strategic goals of the university to a specific cathedral level.
The meeting, moderated by the heads of the Center for Strategic Development and the Department of Science and Innovation, focused on the development of an applied management model for scientific research. The participants did not limit themselves to theoretical information, but in practice conducted a comprehensive analysis of scientific activities for the years 2020-2025 using international platforms such as SciVal, Scopus and Web of Science. In particular, through the analysis of FWCI indicators, assessment of the level of international cooperation and differentiation of contribution to the Goals of Sustainable Development, the scientific potential of the faculties was justified by specific data. This process not only strengthens the positions of departments in global rankings, but also expands the opportunities for participation in major international grant programs such as Horizon Europe.
The practical significance of the session consisted in determining 5-7 key KPIs for each faculty and modeling the internal monitoring system. During the group work, the participants defended management decisions and formed a responsibility matrix along the "dean – head of department – lecturer" chain.
This system allows you to immediately launch effective adjustment mechanisms in case of deviation from strategic indicators. The decisions taken following the results of PROFESSIONAL WEEK 2026 will form the basis of the university's specific action plan for 2026. By combining academic freedom and strict strategic discipline, KazNU intends to consolidate the status of a research university at a new meaningful level.
