SDG-13: The lecture «Sustainable Development Practices: The Experience of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University» was held
On February 6, a special meeting was organized at the Faculty of Philology of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University with first-year students majoring in «Foreign Philology (Western Languages)» The event was held within the framework of civic and patriotic education and the promotion of the environmental dimension of sustainable development. It was organized as a joint initiative of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies and the International Kazakh-German-Chinese Laboratory of Applied Microbiology.
The main objective of the meeting was to contribute to the implementation of one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — SDG 13 «Climate Action», as well as to draw attention to reducing anthropogenic impact and to foster environmental responsibility among young people.
During the event, Alan Aimagambetov, a researcher at the International Kazakh-German-Chinese Laboratory of Applied Microbiology, delivered a presentation on the pressing environmental issues in Kazakhstan and the specific features of the country’s natural ecosystems. He also introduced scientific and applied projects of the university aimed at preventing climate and environmental risks.
The discussion covered topics such as coal bioconversion, ways to reduce the environmental impact of carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases, the potential use of microorganisms and microalgae in environmental technologies, as well as scientific methods for soil restoration and reducing industrial impact.
During the exchange of ideas, it was evident that students showed great interest in the practical significance of modern environmental research and scientific innovations.
After the main part of the meeting, the students visited the laboratories of the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity. During the excursion, they were introduced to modern analytical instruments and laboratory equipment used for studying soil, coal, various materials, and industrial emissions. Scientific projects related to the biological processing of coal, reduction of ammonia emissions, determination of the carbon footprint, and the development of environmental technologies were also presented.
The event clearly demonstrated the contribution of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University to addressing climate and environmental challenges, as well as to promoting the principles of sustainable development.
