SDG No.4: Environmental Journalism — An Important Informational Direction in Studying the Environment

20 february, 2026

Within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal №4 «Quality Education», special attention is given to strengthening the role of environmental journalism in society. Today, the rapid development of digital media has significantly increased the impact of environmental journalism, enabling environmental issues to reach a wider audience. Through social media, documentary films, multimedia reports, podcasts, and online platforms, environmental topics are widely disseminated and actively discussed in the public sphere.

On February 20, 2026, students of Group 203 of the Faculty of Journalism (advisor – Associate Professor R.S. Zhaksylykbayeva) held a curatorial hour on the topic «The Role of Environmental Journalism in the Media Space». During the event, students discussed the fact that modern journalists not only deliver information but also play an important role in drawing public attention to pressing environmental issues.

During the discussion, participants examined the significance of journalism in environmental protection. It was noted that contemporary media frequently address important topics such as climate change, environmental safety, water resource shortages, the impact of industrial waste on the environment, and the preservation of biodiversity.

As a result of the discussion, students identified several key functions of environmental journalism in society. First, the informational function – providing timely and reliable information about environmental disasters, legislative changes, scientific research, and ecological initiatives. Second, the educational function – fostering environmental awareness, promoting responsible consumption, and encouraging the values of nature protection within society. Third, the monitoring function – ensuring public oversight of how industrial enterprises and government institutions comply with environmental regulations.

During the discussion, students emphasized that environmental journalism plays a significant role in modern society. It not only informs the public but also contributes to the development of environmental awareness, promotes a culture of respect for nature, and strengthens people’s responsibility for protecting the environment.

In conclusion, the curatorial session demonstrated the important role of environmental journalism in the media space. Covering issues related to environmental protection, ecological safety, and promoting sustainable development ideas remains one of the key directions of modern journalism. Such events not only increase students’ interest in environmental issues but also help shape a responsible attitude toward the environment among future professionals.
