Republican Information and Educational Event on the Topic «SCREENING PROGRAMS IN KAZAKHSTAN: EFFECTIVENESS AND SIGNIFICANCE»

On March 17, 2026, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Care at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a republican-level information and educational event on the topic «SCREENING PROGRAMS IN KAZAKHSTAN: EFFECTIVENESS AND SIGNIFICANCE». The event was organized at the initiative of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Evidence-Based Medicine. The organizers included Farida Arkenovna Iskakova, Associate Professor of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Evidence-Based Medicine, Candidate of Medical Sciences; Gulbanu Abzhanovna Arynova, Senior Lecturer, Candidate of Medical Sciences; as well as Adelia Zhaqsylyq, a first-year master’s student in the educational program “7M10102 – Public Health.” The organizers ensured a high standard of implementation, paying special attention to the academic and practical significance of the event.

The purpose of the event was to explain to students the importance of screening programs within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal No. 3, “Good Health and Well-Being,” to demonstrate the effectiveness of early disease detection, and to raise awareness of the significance, types, and effectiveness of screening programs in Kazakhstan, while also fostering a responsible attitude toward personal health. Representatives of Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, a physician from City Clinical Hospital No.5, faculty members, master’s students, and undergraduate students took part in the event.

The following presentations were delivered during the event:

Sabina Ikramova, a second-year master’s student in the educational program “7M10102 – Public Health,” presented a report entitled “Examples of Screening Effectiveness.” The presentation analyzed different types of screening and their effectiveness based on specific data.

Adelia Zhaqsylyq, a first-year master’s student in the educational program “7M10102 – Public Health,” delivered a presentation on “An Overview of Screening Programs in Kazakhstan.” The report addressed issues related to human papillomavirus infection, cancer prevention, and the importance of early diagnosis.

Amina Nurkhaim and Yeldana Orynbas, third-year students of Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, presented a report entitled “Early Diagnosis as a Tool for the Sustainable Development of the Healthcare System.” Their presentation highlighted the impact of early disease detection on the healthcare system and its role in ensuring sustainable development.

Ayerke Amir, a fourth-year student of Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, delivered a presentation on “Screening Examinations for Children: Coverage and the Effectiveness of Preventive Check-Ups.” The report presented data on pediatric screening, coverage rates, and the outcomes of preventive examinations.

In addition, Yerkebulan Zhanbolatovich Zhaksykhanov, Head of the KazNU branch at City Clinical Hospital No. 5, took part in the event and provided students and master’s students with important practical recommendations. In his speech, he emphasized the role of screening programs in clinical practice and highlighted current issues and factors influencing patients’ participation in screening.

Interactive methods were widely used throughout the event: a quiz was organized to assess the participants’ level of knowledge, and a discussion platform was held where the importance of screening was actively discussed.

Experienced faculty members also spoke at the event and shared valuable opinions from both scientific and practical perspectives. In particular, the following speakers took part: Akmaral Arshabaevna Aitmanbetova, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Health at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, Candidate of Medical Sciences; Gulshat Altaevna Begimbetova, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Health at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, Candidate of Biological Sciences; Aliya Yerzhanovna Ualieva, Head of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Evidence-Based Medicine at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Associate Professor; Gulbanu Abzhanovna Arynova, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Evidence-Based Medicine, Candidate of Medical Sciences; and Farida Arkenovna Iskakova, Associate Professor of the same department, Candidate of Medical Sciences.

In their speeches, the faculty members emphasized the strategic importance of screening programs in preserving public health and noted that strengthening the preventive focus is one of the key priorities of the modern healthcare system. It was also noted that similar events are planned in the future in cooperation with Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University and physicians from City Clinical Hospital No.5. At the conclusion of the event, certificates were awarded to the most active students and master’s students.

In summary, this event contributed to the development of a health-conscious culture among students, enhanced the role of preventive medicine, and increased awareness of screening programs.
