International Seminar «GIS for Archaeology: Methods and Applications» Held at Al-Farabi KazNU

From March 10 to 13, 2026, the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an international scientific seminar. The event was organized by researchers from the French archaeological research company Eveha International.

The seminar was titled “GIS for Archaeology: Methods and Applications” (GIS for archaeology: methods and applications). The keynote speaker was Quentin Drillat, whose research interests include archaeological data management and integration, survey methodology, spatial modeling, and ancient spatial organization.

During the seminar, modern approaches to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in archaeology were discussed. Participants explored methods of data collection, analysis, and visualization, as well as new opportunities for studying the spatial organization of archaeological sites.

This academic gathering contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4 – ensuring quality education, by providing students and young scholars with access to international methodological expertise. It also aligned with Goal 17 – partnerships for the goals, strengthening collaboration between KazNU and international research institutions.
