Public Speaking Competition
The Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University together with UN Women Multi-Country Office for Central Asia in support of the HeForShe Movement and within the framework of the International Conference of Students and Young Scientists “Farabi Alemi” held on April 12, 2017 the Public Speaking Competition on the topic “How do I see the world for women?”.
The movement of solidarity in support of gender equality under the motto “HeForShe” was started by UN Women in 2014 in order to promote gender equality, combining one-half of humanity to support the other for the common good.
The United Nations established the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Campaigns are being carried out around the world to draw attention to the problem of violence against women.
The Knowledge management specialist of UN-Women Multi-Country Office for Central Asia (Kazakhstan) Gulnaz Imamniyazova was the honorary guest of the competition. The Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Bayan N. Jubatova, Deputy Dean for educational, methodical and educational work Zaure E. Iskakova, Deputy Dean for Scientific and Innovation Work and International Relations Renata Kudaibergenova, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists Zhanar Abdikadyrova, Senior Lecturer of Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages Dinara Dauen, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Korean Studies Akerke Abagan, Lecturer of the Department of Iranian Studies Rosa Shupanova, Lecturer of the Department of Chinese Studies Alina Nurzhaeva were members of the jury.
The competition was attended by 24 participants representing 5 universities of the city: Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Turan University, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, Kazakh-American University and Narxoz University.
Bachelor’s and Master’s students expressed their opinion on the world they see for women in 7 languages: Russian, Kazakh, English, Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Farsi.
Participants highlighted very relevant topics, such as women’s rights, the elimination of violence against women, the participation of women in the political life of the society, women and traditions, gender equality, women and equal career opportunities, etc.
Participants’ speeches were evaluated by the jury members according to the criteria scale (content, structuredness, emotionality, etc.). Also, acting skills, a stage image and requisites were welcomed.
As a result of the competition of public speeches, the best students were recognized as the student of the 2nd year of the Department of Japanese Studies of the Department of Far East of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi KazNU Madi Bazilbek (1st place), 3rd year student of Journalism in Kazakh-American University Alexander Borodihin (2nd place) and 2nd year student of the specialty “Regional Studies” of Turan University Sezim Aubakirova (3rd place). Winners were awarded Certificates and memorable prizes with the UN-Women logo. All participants received Certificates of participation.
From the bottom of the heart we congratulate the participants of the contest – the brilliant and impressive speakers who, in the process of preparing and participating in the competition of public speeches on the topic “How do I see the world for women?” acquired knowledge, experience and skills that are useful in any field of activity and contribute to their development as qualified specialists and active citizens.
Special gratitude is expressed to the UN-Women Multi-Country Office in Almaty for providing invaluable materials (brochures, catalogs, reports on gender issues) to the library of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.
Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Oriental Studies
