«New Silk Road» on the UN Model

Al-Farabi KazNU organized jointly with the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development an international New Silk Road mini-conference on the UN Model in Almaty.

At the conference, a welcome speech was made by the representative of the United Nations Department of Global Communications in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Vlastimil Samek, and First Vice-Rector of Al-Farabi KazNU, academician Mulhambetkali Burkitbayev.

As the speakers noted, this event (MUN NSR) is one of the largest conferences in Central Asia, which has been held since 2010 in Almaty. More than 350 participants and 100 volunteers from 20 countries of Central, South and East Asia, including the USA and Europe, take part in its work annually.

As part of the Almaty mini-conference program, two parallel sessions were held, where delegates consisting of sixty students from various universities in Almaty discussed current global and regional problems on the consequences of the drying of the Aral Sea. The topics of gender equality and the empowerment of women were also addressed.

During the presentation, Mr. Bruno Pozzy, Director of the Regional Office for Europe, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), highlighted ecosystem improvements to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It should be noted that the session was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps of the US Consul General in Kazakhstan, Mr. Eric Meyer and the head of the representative office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty Mr. Iskakov.

At the end of the event, which was held on the initiative of the UN Academic Impact Program (UNAI), a resolution was adopted and the best speakers were selected for the next annual international conference «UN Model - New Silk Road» - 2020.
