Internship at the University of Illinois in Chicago

International academic mobility is one of the most important areas of activity of Al-Farabi KazNU, thanks to the active development of which lecturers, Doctoral students and Master's students undergo internships in prestigious universities of the world, such as the University of Illinois in Chicago, gaining valuable knowledge and experience.

The dynamic and qualitative development of academic mobility at the leading university of the country is evidenced by the fact that every year more than 2000 students of KazNU go abroad to study and undergo language and scientific internships. The University organizes business trips abroad for more than 600 academic staff and administrative officers to participate in international conferences, meetings at the invitation of foreign universities and organizations in the CIS, Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia.

As part of the academic mobility program, a doctoral student of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources of Al-Farabi KazNU Tulendy Nurkenov (supervisor – Shalakhmetova Tamara Minazhevna – Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor) took part in a grant program competition and gained an excellent opportunity to undergo an annual internship at one of the leading educational and research centers in the world, the University of Illinois in Chicago (USA), which is one of the world leaders in biomedical and medical research.

The internship took place in the laboratory under the supervision of Dr. J. Lee in the Department of Bioengineering, which is strong in the cells, tissue, neural engineering, bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, biomechanics and biomolecular engineering. The laboratory is part of the College of Engineering and Medicine and is one of the largest and leading medical schools in the country.

Internships at one of the leading universities have enabled the doctoral student to significantly broaden his scientific horizon, master a whole range of new research methods and skills, and give him the opportunity to work in a team of well-known scientists on unique equipment with various objects and research design. It has also, in general, broadened the knowledge and scientific horizon enabled the doctoral student to acquire and improve both theoretical and practical skills while staying in a language environment and communicating with native speakers and researchers from different countries has made it possible to improve his language skills.
