Urbanization problems in the Global South Countries
In honor of World Urban Day, the COMSATS Climate and Sustainable Development Center (CCCS) in collaboration with the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) held a webinar on «Challenges of rapid development and urbanization in the global South» with participation of professors from the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development of the Department of Geography and Nature Management of Al-Farabi KazNU.
Al-Farabi KazNU is the only higher education institution in the CIS that has become a member of the authoritative international intergovernmental organization «COMSATS» (Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South).
The goal of World Cities Day, established by the UN General Assembly, is to draw the attention of the international community to the issues of urbanization and to promote cooperation between countries in addressing urban issues in order to ensure sustainable development.
The webinar on the «Challenges of Rapid Development and Urbanization in the Global South» focused on key urbanization issues facing the Global South.
The participants showed great interest in the report by Associate Professor of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development at Al-Farabi KazNU B. Yedilbayev entitled «Problems of Urban and Road Ecology».
Experts from the Global South attended the webinar. Their reports suggested ways to solve the problems of sustainable development, urbanization, projects and solutions in such areas as health care, access to clean drinking water, poor drainage system, air and environmental pollution, solid waste management, and carbon dioxide emissions.
