Al-Farabi KazNU held a meeting of deputies of the Majilis of the Parliament with the faculty of the university, dedicated to the Republican referendum on changes and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Chairperson of Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security of Majilis of the Parliament Aigul Kuspan, First Deputy Chairman of city branch of "Amanat" party in Almaty Meyrzhan Otynshiev, members of Committee on Social and Cultural Development of Majilis of the Parliament Aidos Sarym and Zhuldyz Suleimenova, famous journalist and public figure Sergey Ponomarev addressed the university faculty and students.

The participants of the event moderated by Zhanseit Tuimebayev, the Chairman of the Board, Rector of KazNU, discussed the importance and timeliness of the referendum on making amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Addressing to the audience, the head of the university drew attention to the historical significance of the constitutional reforms, aimed at a comprehensive transformation of the entire state model. They mark the beginning of the construction of a significant stage of development of the New Kazakhstan. Amendments to 33 articles of the Basic Law make up one third of the whole Constitution.
"The forthcoming referendum is a historic process which determines the future of our state. The amendments proposed to the Constitution are of particular importance for the country, and the scientific community must not stand aside. The future of our country depends on each of us. Therefore, we are ready to demonstrate our civic position," the rector noted.

Aigul Kuspan, Chairperson of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, addressed to the participants of the meeting with an appeal to support the reforms. "The most important thing for us in this difficult geopolitical situation is to maintain unity. It is no coincidence that the President of the country Kassym-Jomart Tokayev decided to put the discussion of reforms to a referendum, although he could have held them through the Parliament. But he needs the support of all the people, every citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The questions put to referendum are not easy. That's why I hope for educators who can convey to students, who represent a significant part of society, the meaning and importance of the reforms.

In his speech, prominent journalist and social activist Sergei Ponomarev drew attention to the relevance of the referendum in light of the tragic events of January. "Having carefully studied all the amendments proposed to the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I am convinced that they are reasonable and timely, - said the speaker. - If we want to build a New Kazakhstan, we must treat it responsibly. We are smoothly transitioning from a super-presidential republic to a presidential republic with a strong parliament and an independent government. Everyone who is here should talk to their relatives, friends and acquaintances so that they come to the ballot boxes, because there is very little time left. The referendum will take place on June 5. We need a turnout of at least 50% of the country's population. Our task is to explain to the people how important it is.

During the meeting, they discussed the upcoming constitutional reforms, and the participants were able to ask questions and get full and detailed answers from the deputies of the Majilis of the Parliament.
