23 february, 2023

A press tour for media representatives was held at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, during which the achievements of the Scientific and Technological Park and research laboratories of KazNU were presented.

At a meeting with journalists, Chairman of the Board – Rector of KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebayev told about the work done and specific projects.

"Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is the largest scientific and educational center, the only one in the country and the Central Asian region that is included in the Top-150 in the international QS WUR rating. By the decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, KazNU was awarded the status of a research university on July 25, 2022. A program for the development of the university for 2022-2026 as a world-class research university has been developed. In 2022, branches of our university were opened in Istanbul and Bishkek, a branch of MEPhI has been established on the basis of KazNU in Almaty," the rector stated.

The university has formed a unique scientific and innovative infrastructure consisting of 16 faculties, 8 research institutes, 29 research centers and technology parks, 97 production branches. Every year on a competitive basis, university scientists implement more than 400 technical projects and programs on fundamental and applied scientific research, as well as targeted financing programs totaling 8.1 billion KZT.

Integration of KazNU with scientific institutes and organizations has been strengthened: 21 educational programs have been implemented, 396 master and PhD students had completed their studies. 400 patents and copyright certificates for various inventions have been obtained. The number of articles in Scopus from the Republic of Kazakhstan has been increased, it is worth mentioning that 58% are published annually by KazNU employees.

Since 2014 Al-Farabi KazNU has been progressively implementing joint activities within the framework of the University Integration Program with 10 Research Institutes of the JSC Gylym Ordasy. Last year KazNU increased the format and scale of integration by signing more contracts with the Gylym Ordasy Research Institute.

A Science Park has been operating on the basis of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University since 2008, which has proven to be a successful incubator of innovative ideas of scientists and students. The Science Park monitors the progress of work on the innovative project "Creation of Joint Production of Polycrystalline Brittle Powdered Rock from Calcium Carbonate for Application to the Surface of Shell Titles in Liquid Form" with the Central Asian Scientific Research and Design Institute ‘TRANSNEFT’.

In order to implement this project, a subsidiary commercial organization "Innovations Plus" was created, which began work on the experimental application of this material on the facades of KazNU buildings, confirming the high efficiency of the new building material. By the present time, the production of innovative construction material in the amount of 10,000 m2 per month has been established.

The Science Park also continues to implement a project to develop a mobile autonomous hybrid solar power plant with a capacity of 2 or more kW/hour, designed to supply electricity in places where there is no traditional electricity. The Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, JSC Kazakhtelecom, mobile operators, representatives of the agro-industrial complex and other organizations are highly interested in this project.

The next successful project ‘Technology of Cleaning Oil Wells from asphalt, resin, paraffin and hydrate sediments’ is also carried out by the Science Park together with the company ‘Innovations Plus’. An automatic oil deposition cleaning plant developed by scientists performs cleaning during production, cyclically and daily, which allows oil to be extracted continuously. The device has high wear resistance parameters and needs minimal monitoring capacities. The use of this device allow you to optimize the operating costs of cleaning up to 80% of the existing ones, reduce the risks of loss and oil spill during cleaning, reduces the negative impact of the human factor during operation.

The project "Development of Innovative Products based on Plant Raw Materials" was presented to journalists at the Research Center of Medicinal Plants. University scientists under the leadership of the Professor of KazNU, Zhanar Zhenis for the first time issued multi-natural oral nutritional supplements consisting of several types of medicinal herbs growing in Kazakhstan. They have preventive and curative properties with the main focus on the influenza virus, flu, as well as to maintain women's health and liver functioning.

Then the journalists visited the Center for Process Innovations, familiarized with the project "Development and Creation of University Nanosatellites of the Al-Farabi Series", authored by PhD doctor Amirkhan Temirbayev. KazNU named after al-Farabi was the developer of the first Kazakh nanosatellite of the CubeSat standard. Today the university has already launched two nanosatellites. CubeSat solves a number of technological, scientific and educational tasks, such as studies of the atmosphere of Mars, asteroids, solar wind, as well as monitoring the surface of the globe in real time.

Today with the support of JSC Science Fund on the basis of the Center for Process Innovations, the project "Production of Innovative Designers of Small Spacecraft for Educational Institutions" is also implemented, it aimed at the development of space robotics, as well as STEM education in schools and universities of the country. More than ten sets have already been sold, dozens of new schools have expressed interest in using the AlfaSat constructor. It is planned to introduce the designer in colleges and universities of the country.
