Members of the Almaty City Commission for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Abikenova Gulzhazira Estaevna and PhD Doctor Baidavletova Madina Dosbergenovna were invited to the meeting.

Zabikh Sh.A. noted that 1920-1950. the last century was a difficult period for our people and a tragic page in our national history; Innocent people fell under the “millstone of repression,” including Alash activists who stood up to defend the people. Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev dated November 24, 2020 No. 456 “On the State Commission for the Complete Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression” gave a new impetus to conduct research and fill gaps in national history. The main task of the State Commission is the complete political and legal rehabilitation of victims of political repression.

Associate Professor Abikenova G.E. noted that the State Commission is a large-scale scientific project and from the beginning of its implementation a new stage has been opened for the study of our history of the period of the 20-50s of the XX century. Also, the work of this commission is aimed at preserving the historical memory of those people who suffered during the years of totalitarianism. According to Gulzhazira Yestaevna, not only the Alashorda residents suffered, but also their families, who were subjected to various fines and persecution. Women were sent to forced labor camps on trumped-up charges. It was during these difficult times that representatives of different nations, including Germans, Koreans and others, were deported to the territory of Kazakhstan. Many Kazakh families were forced to flee abroad, that is, to Turkey, China and other states, in order to save their families from the repressive policies of the Soviet regime. Alash activists did a lot of work to educate their people, publishing material on topical issues. The role of the Alash intelligentsia in preserving the Kazakh people is great, and their rich heritage is of great interest in our time.

She also noted that the process of studying the history of repression requires a scrupulous and comprehensive approach. Each material, each case is not just a folder with data that can be taken from the archive and shown to the public. This is the history of an individual or a group of individuals, which requires scientific study to form an objective assessment.

In the speech of Baydavletova M.D. noted that over the three years of activity of the State Commission, scientists provided a list of new names of victims of repression. Unfortunately, we cannot provide exact numbers of victims, as work to identify people continues. Special work is being carried out to search for the descendants of citizens sentenced to death or various camps for 10-15 years. During the commission's work, individuals are identified and measures such as installing memorial plaques or naming the streets on which they lived are considered. Contacts are also established and special meetings are organized with the descendants of the repressed who are abroad.

Over the past period, the General Prosecutor's Office declassified more than 2.4 million materials, the National Security Committee - more than 1.5 thousand archival files and documents, the Ministry of Internal Affairs - more than 5.3 thousand documents. As part of the activities of the State Commission, the prosecutor's office identified new data and, through prosecutorial supervision, more than 250 thousand citizens were rehabilitated. These are mainly persons from among the exiles and special settlers.
