27 march, 2024

On March 20, 2024, in the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4, «Quality Education», and SDG 17, «Partnership for Sustainable Development», Professor Park Sun Hyung of Dongguk University (Republic of Korea) held an online lecture for students of the Far East Department of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The lecture was titled «What is AI governance and what are the issues and challenges? Focusing on Critical Perspectives».

Professor Park Sun Hyung, the Dean of the Institute of Education at Dongguk University, specializes in Educational Administration and Policy. During his lecture, the professor discussed contemporary issues related to AI governance and presented the results of analyzing how AI algorithms can ultimately determine the interests of power and the allocation of limited resources. Students in the Department of Korean Studies had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of advanced technology, and consider its social and ethical dimensions.

The professor emphasized that despite all the potential benefits, the decision-making processes and internal mechanisms of algorithmic AI still remain a «black box». During the lecture, the need for a critical systematic analysis of the benefits and limitations of the practicality and applicability of AI, as well as the introduction of legal and institutional incentives and controls to increase the transparency of algorithm development were discussed. «The current global structural situation of human control and domination by the power of AI requires an interdisciplinary approach to governance using perspectives from political science, educational policy, and critical theory», emphasized the professor.

Professor Park Sun Hyung's lecture was a significant step in the educational process, allowing students and society at large to look at the issue of AI governance from a new, critical perspective. The Far East Department would like to thank the professor for the informative lecture and analysis of the interdisciplinary approach in AI management, and look forward to further cooperation and inspiring exchange of ideas in the process of educating our students.
