National referendum in connection with the construction of a nuclear power plant

SDG 16. As part of the implementation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's Address to the People of Kazakhstan, "Fair Kazakhstan: Law and Order, Economic Growth, Public Optimism," an event dedicated to the nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant took place on October 1, 2024, at Dormitory No. 18. The event was organized by the Department of Customs, Financial, and Environmental Law of the Faculty of Law in honor of the 90th anniversary of Al-Farabi KazNU.
Opening speeches were delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, PhD in Law, Associate Professor U.A. Akhatov, the Head of the Department, Doctor of Law, Professor G.A. Kuanaliyeva, as well as other faculty members. During the discussion of pressing issues related to energy security, they noted the growing global energy deficit and emphasized Kazakhstan's need for reliable energy sources. As is well known, the President has paid special attention to the development of nuclear energy as a way to meet the growing energy demands of the economy.
Currently, more than 400 nuclear reactors are operating worldwide, and nuclear power plants are actively being developed in 32 countries. The participants of the discussion highlighted the importance of making well-reasoned decisions when constructing new facilities and stressed the need for broad public debate on the matter. Students actively participated in the discussion, sharing their opinions and asking questions.
During the event, the department also donated books to the library of Dormitory No. 18. Dean of the Faculty of Law, Ualikhan Akhatov, answered students' questions regarding leisure activities, the educational process, and daily needs, assuring them of the university administration's support.
Such events strengthen the connection between the educational institution and students, as well as foster the development of critical thinking and an active civic stance. In conclusion, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, PhD in Law, Associate Professor U.A. Akhatov, and Professor G.A. Kuanaliyeva wished the students success in their studies and personal lives.
