The Academic Council discussed the results of the admission campaign

The Academic Council of KazNU named after Al-Farabi heard reports on the results of the admission campaign of KazNU in 2024, the functioning of scientific journals of the university, licensing and accreditation of laboratories, as well as the main indicators of the university in 2024-2025 academic year.

 

On the first topic, a detailed report was presented by the Executive Secretary of the KazNU Admissions Committee, Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Natalia Borisovna Yem. This year's admissions campaign was successful and attracted a record number of applicants - 10,603. She emphasised that the university is particularly popular with young people because of its high academic standards and wide range of courses and programmes.

The regional information campaigns played an important role in attracting talented students from different parts of the country. New rules were introduced for the work of the Admissions Committee. The creative exams and the application process took place from 20 June to 10 August. Those who have served in the military are enrolled on a paid basis on the basis of an interview during 2 years of military service with a 100% discount on the basis of the memorandum concluded with the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Citizens who suffered from social, natural and anthropogenic emergencies of global or regional scale also received educational grants.

In 2024-2025, for the first time, differentiated grants with partial payment for education were introduced - when applying for the competition, this type of grant is designated as "educational grant for partial payment of higher education with the award of a bachelor's degree at the expense of the state budget". 1735 foreign citizens were admitted to study at KazNU. 6027 people were admitted to the Bachelor's programme, 484 to the Master's programme and 807 to the Doctoral programme.  252 people were admitted to the college, 658 - to the faculty of pre-university education, 58 - to the school. 585 people were admitted to study at the KazNU branch in Bishkek.

Margulan Ibragimov, Director of the Department of Scientific and Innovation Activities, presented a report and spoke in detail about the importance of high-quality publication activity to raise the university's scientific status in the international arena, and shared strategies for improving the process of laboratory licensing and accreditation. There are 25 journals at KazNU. The list of journals recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for publication of the main results of scientific activity includes 21 journals. The contract for co-publication was signed with the journal "New Studies of Tuva", which is included in the international databases Scopus and Web of Science. Starting from the first issue of 2025, KazNU scientists will be able to publish up to five articles in each issue of the journal on social and humanitarian issues in the sections 'Turkic-Mongolian World' and 'Voices of Asia'.  Currently, 4 scientific journals of Al-Farabi KazNU are included in Scopus databases and 6 journals are included in Web of Science. The speaker also spoke in detail about the types of laboratories and the rules of accreditation of testing laboratories.

The Acting Director of the Centre for Strategic Development, Gulzira Vasilina, in her report presented the main indicators of the University's Indicative Plan for the academic year 2024-2025. She emphasised the need for strategic planning and outlined the directions for further growth and development of the University in the context of global challenges.

Chairman of the Board - Rector of KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebaev instructed to develop a roadmap to optimise the work of scientific journals, introduce modern requirements for editorial processes, indexing in authoritative databases, increasing the citation of publications, as well as to ensure closer cooperation between the heads of research laboratories and relevant structural units. The Department of Science and Innovation Activity should conduct a detailed audit of the current state of scientific journals and develop a roadmap for their development.
