10 september, 2024

On September 10, Ann-Marie Satre, associate professor of Uppsala University (Sweden), gave a lecture at the faculty building.

Ann-Mari Sätre is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics and Research Director at the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies IRES at Uppsala University. She specializes in the structure and functioning of the Soviet/Russian economy. Her current research focuses on women's labor and processes of social marginalization in Russia. She has published numerous works on Soviet/Russian political economy. Her latest book is The Politics of Poverty in Contemporary Russia (Routledge, 2019).

Ann-Mari Sätre shared her research experience, talking about the economic and socio-political situation of women in Russia in the 1990s. Her research showed that the economic opportunities of Russians, especially women, were higher in the early 90s than in subsequent decades. The lecture also included a discussion of the socio-economic situation of women in Kazakhstan at the present stage. Anna-Marie Sätre noted that, according to her observations, of all Central Asia, Kazakhstan has the highest socio-political and economic opportunities for women. Anna-Marie Sätre presented her new book “Women’s roles and agencies in Russian society before and during the war in Ukraine”. The lecture was attended by master's and doctoral students of the Department of Political Science and Political Technologies of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
