Lee Byong Jo Visiting Professor, PhD
In order to enhance the academic reputation of Al-Farabi KazNU, PhD Lee Byong Jo, professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Seoul), was invited to the Department as a visiting professor from the 2014-2015 academic year.
In 1997, Lee Byong Jo graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Department of Russian Language). In 2002, he completed his master's degree in Russian History from the above-mentioned university, specializing in History of Koreans in Russia and the CIS. In 2008, Lee Byong Jo received his PhD in Russian History, specializing in History of Koreans in Russia and the CIS. Since 2004, he has worked as a professor at the Department of History at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and is a full-time researcher at the Institute of History and Culture of the said university. Lee Byong Jo has over 20 years of experience in research and teaching on projects of the Academy of Korean Studies, the National Research Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, as well as universities in Japan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The scope of his scientific research is related to the history of overseas Koreans, he has published over 30 works on this topic.
Since February 2, 2015, Lee Byong Jo was accepted to the position of the head of the Department of Korean Studies. During this period, the professor managed the department, maintained contacts with educational, scientific and business organizations of the Republic of Korea both in Kazakhstan and Korea. This professor regularly attracted student scholarships. As a result of the research work, Professor Lee carried out research projects jointly with Korea University on the topic of "Compiling a database and establishing contacts with foreign scientists and universities to study the Korean diaspora in the CIS"(Academy of Korean Studies, Korea, 06.2011-06.2016) and jointly with Dongguk University on the topic of "Research on the faces of the modern Koryoin"(Academy of Korean Studies, Korea, 06.2016-06.2019). Various research projects have also been implemented on the topic of “Compiling Textbooks on Korean Literature in Kazakhstan (Including Literature of the Korean Diaspora in the CIS) and Training Specialists in the Field of Literature”(Academy of Korean Studies, Korea, 06.2017-06.2020), “Research Project on Overseas Korean Studies: Expanding the Horizon and Strengthening the Research Capabilities of Overseas Korean Studies”(Academy of Korean Studies, Korea, 01.2018-10.2018), and “Studying the Impact of the Exchange of Musical Arts Experiences between the USSR and North Korea on the Development of Performing Arts Culture in Koryoin Society in Central Asia”(Academy of Korean Studies, Korea, 02.2021-01.2022), and many other projects for the period up to 2025.
Professor Lee has also launched a regular "Business Course in Korean Language Teaching" which will be implemented from 2024 at the Faculty of Oriental Studies. During this period, Professor Lee Byong Jo has published articles in Thomson Reuters database journals, and the Department's events are constantly covered in Korean media. During the current period of his work at the Department, Professor Lee Byong Jo regularly holds special lectures with the involvement of foreign professors, as well as large-scale extracurricular activities to develop Korean studies and enhance the status of KazNU in the foreign academic space. This professor received the Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Education - Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Korea in 2022.
