Laboratory of applied microbiology opened in KazNU

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the international conference “Sustainable Future-2024: Biotech, Ecology, Energy” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Within the framework of the event, the International Laboratory of Applied Microbiology, created on the basis of Kazakh-German-Chinese partnership, was opened.

 

The event was attended by representatives of management, scientists, professors, teachers and students of universities. Scientists from leading universities of Germany, China, Pakistan and Kazakhstan made presentations. More than 60 students and young scientists from different countries of Central Asia presented reports and booklets on their research work.

The plenary session was opened by member of the Board - Vice-Rector for Scientific and Innovative Activities Zhamila Aitzhanova. She noted that Al-Farabi KazNU, Research Institute of Ecology and Bioresource Sustainability, faculties of Biology and Biotechnology, Geography and Nature Management make a significant contribution to sustainable development through education, research, partnership and social initiatives.

“Educational programs of KazNU faculties are aimed at training specialists who understand the importance of obtaining environmentally friendly products, processing raw materials necessary for agriculture and ecology. Thanks to scientific research, field experiments, cooperation with international organizations, our students and teachers form the future of the industry focused on environmental sustainability and bio-resources”, - emphasized the Vice-Rector in her speech.

At the plenary session, presentations were made by: Professor Ilya Diegel-Aachensky (University of Applied Sciences, Germany), Professor Nurshat Nurazhi (Renewable Energy Laboratory, Department of Chemistry and Materials Science, School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, Nazarbayev University (Astana), Professor Dr. Zulfihar Ali-IOFS, Director of Pakistan Division of Programs and Projects (Pakistan) and others. 

The conference focused on cutting-edge advances in food and agricultural biotechnology, biodiversity conservation strategies and innovative biotechnological approaches to coal waste treatment. The conference resulted in the publication of 40 articles, recognized as the best, in journals indexed in the scientific database Scopus.

The opening ceremony of the International Laboratory of Applied Microbiology on the basis of Kazakhstan-German-Chinese partnership was held within the framework of the conference. The event was attended by German, Chinese and domestic scientists. Prof. Ilya Digel-Aachensky (University of Applied Sciences, Germany) was awarded the medal “Eren eenbegi ushin”. The participants were also awarded cash prizes in the nominations “Best Poster” and “Best Report”.

The laboratory's activity is aimed at the development of scientific research in the field of biotechnology at the international level, introduction of innovative biotechnologies and increasing the scientific potential of Kazakhstan. The scientific center was created as a result of joint work of Kazakh, German and Chinese scientists, focusing on applied branches of microbiology - agriculture, ecology, medicine and industry. The project will be a great contribution of Kazakhstan to the competitiveness of science and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.
