On November 22, 2024, as part of the SDGs 4, 6, and 13, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology hosted a leadership lecture titled " The importance of water resources management, land-use and waste management for the sustainable development of modern societies" by Professor Javier Rodrigo Illari from the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

Professor Illari presented a comprehensive analysis of the causes and consequences of a flood that occurred in late October in Valencia, emphasizing the role of climate change in increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events. He also highlighted anthropogenic factors, such as changes in land use, which impair the ability of regions to manage water flows effectively.

Special attention was given to modern approaches to flood monitoring, modeling, and forecasting. The lecturer introduced innovative methods such as remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies, and hydrodynamic models, demonstrating their ability to provide highly accurate risk assessments and predictions of emergency scenarios.

The lecture made a significant contribution to the development of the academic community, offering students, graduate students, and faculty an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and engage with a leading international expert.
