KazNU Faculty of Physics and Technology Students Visited the National Bank Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan

A group of students from the Physics and Technology and Mechanics and Mathematics Faculties of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University visited the National Bank Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty.
During the excursion, participants learned about the history of monetary circulation in Kazakhstan. They explored exhibitions dedicated to coins and banknotes from the Silk Road era, the pre-revolutionary Russian Empire, the Soviet period, the early years of Kazakhstan’s independence, and modern currency notes.
Students were particularly interested in circulation, collectible, and investment coins, as well as the products of the Kazakhstan Mint in Ust-Kamenogorsk. They were introduced to the bicolor "Cosmos" collection of coins made from a unique alloy of silver and tantalum. Students from the "Materials Science and New Materials Technology" program showed special interest in coins that feature alloys capable of changing color.
Additionally, participants learned about banknote security features, the process of exchanging old currency notes, the specifics of handling cash, and the rights of citizens in financial transactions. Future banknote designs were also presented.
The event was organized as part of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 12 – Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns;
- SDG 16 – Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, ensuring access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.
The excursion broadened the students' horizons, deepened their knowledge of the country’s financial system, and provided insights into modern achievements in numismatics and banknote security.
