Scientific ties with China are expanding

A delegation headed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Kazakhstan, Han Chunlin, visited Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. During the working visit, the ambassador toured the university's centers and laboratories and familiarized himself with the scientific potential of the university.
The distinguished guests were welcomed by the Chairman of the Board – Rector of KazNU, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, who informed them about the university's collaborative work with Chinese institutions.
Currently, KazNU has established close cooperation with Chinese universities. As part of this partnership, laboratories and centers in various fields have been opened at the university, and for the first time, a branch of a Chinese university has been established.
First, Ambassador Han Chunlin visited the Kazakh-Chinese joint laboratory "Technology and Application of Remote Sensing". Here, specialists conduct in-depth monitoring of environmental issues through remote Earth observation. The center, spanning 500 square meters, provides a large platform for collaborative work among scientists from Kazakhstan, China, and Central Asia. It is worth noting that the installation of the necessary tools and equipment for this laboratory was sponsored by the Chinese side.
Later, the delegation members visited a center showcasing the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia. The high-performance supercomputer, supplied from China to KazNU under the initiative of the heads of the two states, has a performance of 1.94 PFLOPS. It is considered one of the best among the 600 supercomputers worldwide. In the future, this high-tech device will enable scientists across Kazakhstan to work with large data sets, model various projects for government agencies, and develop the country's IT infrastructure.
During the visit to the university, the ambassador also toured the branch of the Northwestern Polytechnical University of China, which was opened in 2023 at KazNU. There, he spoke with students enrolled in the branch. Upon graduation, students are awarded diplomas from both universities.
"The branch of the Chinese university is the first of its kind to open in Kazakhstan. This initiative is an important step in training technical specialists. Also, this year, KazNU and the Northwestern Polytechnical University plan to launch a microsatellite into space. This will be a historic event. The results of this project will be seen by both countries. Thus, through this project, students and faculty exchange experiences and refine their knowledge. This, in turn, will contribute to the development of scientific and higher education cooperation between Kazakhstan and China", - said KazNU's leader, Zhanseit Tuimebayev.
The delegation, headed by Han Chunlin, visited the Research Center for Medicinal Plants and the Center for Innovative Products and High-Tech Projects "Farabi Hub", where they familiarized themselves with the results of innovative projects developed by scientists.
For his part, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Kazakhstan, Han Chunlin, emphasized that he is making every effort to further deepen comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. In particular, he expressed his intention to collaborate with Al-Farabi National University in the fields of science and higher education.
