Roundtable Discussion on "Cultural Diversity in a Multiethnic Society"

On February 17, 2025, the Faculty of Geography at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a roundtable discussion on "Cultural Diversity in a Multiethnic Society: Foundations of Unity and Harmony." The event was organized based on the principles of SDG-10: Reducing Inequality Within and Among Countries. It was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and the Day of Gratitude. It was organized by Turdibuvi Masymzhanovna Kazakbayeva, the faculty representative for the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, under the guidance of Aiman Shakenkyzy Shaken, Deputy Dean for Academic, Methodological, and Educational Affairs.
The roundtable was held at the Kazakh-Chinese Joint Laboratory on Remote Sensing Technology and Applications. It brought together faculty members, students, and representatives of public organizations. The honorary guest of the event was Lyudmila Alexandrovna Nabokova, Chairwoman of the Almaty Cultural and Ethnic Society of Germans "Vozrozhdenie".
A presentation on “National Unity as the Basis for Cultural Development and the Formation of the Country’s Cultural Image” was delivered by Marat Aivarovich Khozhayev, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Recreational Geography and Tourism. Meanwhile, Olga Alexandrovna Zubova, Senior Lecturer at the UNESCO Department for Sustainable Development, spoke about the development of interethnic relations in the student environment, using her department’s experience as an example.
After the presentations, an active discussion was held on pressing issues of multicultural interaction. Participants shared successful practices in preserving ethno-cultural heritage and strengthening interethnic harmony.
The roundtable concluded with an open discussion where students and guests exchanged views, asked questions to the speakers, and emphasized the importance of such events in fostering tolerance and unity in society. Lyudmila Alexandrovna Nabokova, Chairwoman of "Vozrozhdenie," shared the experience of the German community in Kazakhstan in promoting interethnic harmony and cultural diversity. On behalf of all Germans in Almaty and the region, she expressed deep gratitude to the Kazakh land and people for their kindness and generosity during difficult times, as well as for their long-standing friendship.
At the end of the meeting, participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers and highlighted the significance of interethnic dialogue in strengthening harmony and mutual understanding in society.
