28 february, 2025

On February 26, 2025, as part of Sustainable Development Goal 4, "Quality Education," an open lecture on the topic "Fundamentals of Engineering Ecology" was held. The lecture was delivered by G.Z. Bizhanova, a first-year PhD student at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, specializing in "8D05205 – Geoecology and Environmental Management", under the supervision of M. Abdibattaeva, Associate Professor at the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development.

The lecture aimed to raise awareness among attendees about the principles of engineering ecology and sustainable development. Its main goal was to provide participants with fundamental knowledge about the key principles of engineering ecology, the impact of technical systems on the environment, and methods to mitigate the negative effects of human activities. For students of the "Restaurant and Hospitality Business" educational program, the open lecture provided: An understanding of the environmental aspects of restaurant and hotel operations – the impact of the hospitality industry on the environment. Knowledge of modern technologies and methods of environmental protection – principles of water and air purification, waste recycling, and the rational use of resources. Practical examples of successful environmental solutions – separate waste collection and recycling, the use of eco-friendly packaging, and the reduction of food waste.

Competitive advantages of eco-conscious businesses – how the implementation of ecological technologies enhances a business's reputation and attracts environmentally conscious customers.

The development of environmental awareness among staff and clients – fostering a responsible attitude toward natural resources among employees and guests.

Thus, the lecture helped students recognize ecology as an essential part of the modern hospitality industry and understand how the principles of sustainable development can be applied in their professional activities.
