An open seminar on the topic “Theory of Society. Classification of Social Forms”

13 march, 2025

On March 13, 2025, Raushan Umbet, a doctoral student of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, conducted an open seminar for 2nd-year students of the “Sociology” program on the topic “Theory of Society. Classification of Social Forms” under the guidance of Doctor of Sociology, Professor G. S. Abdirayimova, and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences.

The seminar focused on the key ideas of Georg Simmel’s sociological theory, his contribution to formal sociology, and his interpretation of society as a process of stable interactions.

📌 Topics discussed:
🔹 How do social forms (dyad, triad, conflict, cooperation, etc.) structure social relations?
🔹 How does an individual shape the social group and simultaneously depend on it?
🔹 Who is the “stranger” in Simmel’s theory and why is this figure important in analyzing social processes?

💬 During the seminar, students analyzed real-life examples of social interactions in the digital age, discussed the applicability of Simmel’s concepts to urban and networked societies, and actively participated in case analysis illustrating how interaction structures influence individual behavior.

The seminar was held in a lively and engaging atmosphere, contributing to the development of critical thinking and a deeper understanding of classical sociological approaches.
