Meeting of master’s degree Students with Translator Dennis Keen

 On March 13, 2025, at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University the  first-year master’s degree  students specializing in Translation Studies had the opportunity to meet renowned translator and researcher of Kazakh culture, Dennis Keen. The event was held in accordance with SDG 4 “Quality Education” under the guidance of candidate of philological sciences, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, Tatyana Evgenievna Pshenina with participation of the Zh.Burkitbayeva, who is the 1st year doctorant student specializing in Translation Studies.

The discussion centered around Mukhtar Auezov’s essay “Amerika Aserleri” and its English translation by Dennis Keen. The translator shared his thoughts on working with the text, discussing the challenges of translating cultural realities and conveying the work's stylistic nuances and atmosphere. During the conversation, the master’s students had the chance to ask questions about lexical and grammatical choices and the role of context in translation.

A special highlight of the meeting was the students’ presentation of their translation of the essay into Russian.

Such meetings provide invaluable experience for future translators, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the profession, refine their skills, and broaden their horizons. The students expressed their gratitude to Dennis Keen for the engaging and insightful discussion, as well as to the faculty members for organizing this important event.
