In memory of a colleague

11 april, 2025

April 11 will mark 10 years since the untimely death of the head of the laboratory of applied catalysis of the D.V. Sokolsky Institute of Fuel, Catalysis and Electrochemistry, Shamil Abzalovich Gilmundinov (10/31/1952-04/11/2015). The result of the scientific activity of Sh.A. Gilmundinov in the field of environmental catalysis, purification of vehicle exhaust gases, industrial waste gases was the large number of publications (more than 150), patents (10), and the results of successfully completed business contracts (more than 100). Sh.A. Gilmundinov graduated from the physics department of KazSU (now KazNU), but connected his career with chemistry and worked until his last day at the D.V. Sokolsky IFCE. He participated in most of the Institute's semi-industrial tests both in Kazakhstan and abroad (China, Turkey, Russia), he was a scientific consultant and executor of ISTC projects. A large volume of the Institute's contractual work was carried out by a relatively small team of the Applied Catalysis Laboratory (8 people) on the pilot industrial base. I was fortunate to work as a leading researcher in Sh.A. Gilmundinov's laboratory for more than 10 years. The developments of our laboratory for creating highly effective catalysts on metal blocks are known outside of Kazakhstan, and received a positive assessment during tests at Haldor Topsøe. The catalysts have successfully passed operational tests and are used in mining transport, Ikarus buses, KAMAZ and MAZ vehicles, forklifts, and tractors. After the untimely death of Sh.A. Gilmundinov, my co-authors and I published more than 30 scientific articles, where Sh.A. Gilmundinov was noted as a co-author. Sh.A. Gilmundinov had many creative plans, innovative ideas, which, unfortunately, were not destined to come true.
The bright memory of Sh.A. Gilmundinov will forever remain in our hearts.
