An open lecture on "The Emergence of Sectoral Directions in Sociology and the Early Stage of Development. The Chicago School of Sociology"

On April 8, 2025, Akmaral Maksutova, a master's student of the "7M03101 – Sociology" educational program at the Department of Sociology and Social Work of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, conducted an open lecture for 1st-year undergraduate students of the "6B03101 – Sociology" program under the guidance of Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor G.S. Abdiraiymova, and Candidate of Sociological Sciences, academic supervisor G.A. Kenzhakimova.

The lecture focused on the formation stages of sociology as a scientific discipline and the emergence of sectoral directions. Special attention was given to the contribution of the Chicago School to the development of applied and empirical sociology.

The following key topics were covered during the lecture:

  • Socio-historical conditions that led to the emergence of sectoral directions in sociology;
  • The role of the Chicago School in the study of urban life, migration, and deviant behavior;
  • Research methods used by the Chicago School;
  • The significance of fieldwork and qualitative research methods in sociological studies.

The lecture was conducted in an interactive format, with active student participation, questions, and open discussions.
