A Scientific Seminar with an Oxford University Neuroscientist Held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

19 may, 2025

On May 12, a scientific seminar was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) featuring neuroscientist Dr. Raffaele Sarnataro, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford. The event was organized by the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine, and Neuroscience of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at KazNU, and gathered students, master's candidates, and PhD students interested in the latest advances in neuroscience and molecular biology.

Dr. Raffaele Sarnataro works in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics at the University of Oxford—one of the world's leading academic institutions. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying sleep regulation. During the seminar, he delivered a lecture titled “Mitochondrial origins of the pressure to sleep”, in which he discussed his work on the role of mitochondria in the development of the biological need for sleep.

The seminar took place at 12:00 in Conference Room 409 of the KazNU Scientific Library. In a lively academic atmosphere, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, delve deeper into key aspects of the research, and explore possibilities for international collaboration in the field of neuroscience.

Such events, organized by the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine, and Neuroscience, contribute to the strengthening of academic ties and the integration of Kazakhstani science into the global scientific community, while also offering valuable opportunities for the professional development of students and young researchers.
