Starting from May 26, 2025, first-year students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, studying under the “6B05205 – Geography” educational program, took part in a professional (general geographic) field training practice.

The practice was organized by the Department of Geography, Land Management, and Cadastre. During the fieldwork, students studied geographical phenomena in real-world conditions and analyzed the spatial organization of natural components.

The selected locations for the field practice included natural sites near Almaty – Turgen Gorge, Charyn Canyon, and the Altyn-Emel State National Nature Park. These areas are notable for their landscape diversity and provided excellent opportunities for students to develop field research skills.

During the practice, students:

  • described physical and geographical conditions;
  • analyzed the interrelationship between landforms, climate, soils, and vegetation cover;
  • depicted landscape structures in the form of map-diagrams;
  • kept field journals and described the studied sites.

The scientific supervisors of the practice were: Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Senior Lecturer S.S. Tugelbayev, and lecturers A.Ä. Asanbayeva and N.Ä. Kurbankozha. The instructors guided the students in field research methods and provided professional support while working with real geographical sites.

As a result of the field practice, students were able to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. They also enhanced their skills in comprehensive assessment and analysis of the natural environment, and acquired initial professional competencies in the field of geography.
