First-year students of the "Hydrology" program successfully completed their field training

17 june, 2025

From May 27 to June 6, 2025, 54 first-year students of the "Hydrology" program at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University underwent field training in the Almaty region. The training was conducted under the guidance of faculty members from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology: Prof. A.N. Erdesbay, M.S. Ospanova, J.U. Beksultanova, and A.M. Alimbay.

The training included four main routes:

May 27 — Kapchagay Reservoir

Students conducted leveling of the terrain and determined elevation marks, assessed the water quality of the reservoir through hydrochemical studies, and analyzed the organoleptic properties of the water.

May 29 — Ile River, Kapchagay Gorge Hydrological Post

After familiarizing themselves with the hydrological post, participants performed sounding operations on a ferry using a hydrometric winch, measured the river's flow velocity with a hydrometric current meter, determined the water discharge and temperature, and collected samples for further processing.

May 30 – June 6 — Turgen River, Tauturgen Village

During the extended fieldwork, students performed visual terrain surveys, measured water levels and temperatures, conducted leveling, performed sounding operations, measured flow velocities, and determined the river's water discharge.

Introductory Route — Issyk Lake

As part of the training, students also visited Issyk Lake, where they familiarized themselves with the lake's hydrological regime and the surrounding natural environment.

The field training sessions allowed students to reinforce their theoretical knowledge, acquire practical skills in hydrological research, and become acquainted with the peculiarities of fieldwork.

The department expresses gratitude to all participants for their responsible attitude and active participation.
