A NEW EDUCATIONAL LABORATORY FOR SOIL SCIENCE AND ECOLOGY HAS BEEN OPENED

4 september, 2025

At the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management, the UNESCO Department for Sustainable Development of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the educational laboratory was named after Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Shimshikov Batyrgeldy.

Batyrgeldy Shimshikov is a scientist who has made a significant contribution to the development of Russian science on soils and ecology. He has implemented large–scale scientific projects, from soil research between the Volga and Ural rivers to the study of industrial pollution in the Caspian region and in Western Kazakhstan. His works are of great importance for improving soil fertility, protecting ecosystems and ensuring sustainable environmental management.

The new educational laboratory will focus on the study of soil science and ecology. Here, students and young researchers will conduct practical research on soil fertility conservation, ecosystem protection, and pollution impact assessment. In addition, the laboratory's work is closely linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals – efficient use of land resources, adaptation to climate change, conservation of biodiversity, ensuring environmental safety, as well as ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Naming the laboratory after a scientist is a recognition of his scientific achievements and a huge contribution to the education of the younger generation.
