Akim of Almaty city got acquainted with scientific infrastructure of KazNU
Akim of Almaty Darkhan Satybaldy visited al-Farabi Kazakh National University and got acquainted with its research infrastructure.
During the visit, the Akim of the city was shown modern laboratories, research centers and innovative projects of the university. Chairman of the Board – Rector of KazNU, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, spoke in detail about the scientific research conducted by scientists and young researchers, as well as their contribution to the development of the city.
First of all, Darkhan Satybaldy got acquainted with the Farabi Hub center for innovative products and high-tech projects, which was opened in honor of the 90th anniversary of the University. The 5 000-square-meter center is focused on the implementation of projects in the creative industry, artificial intelligence and startups. The Farabi Hub unites students, researchers and entrepreneurs, creating conditions for generating innovative solutions. Its main goal is the rapid implementation of scientific developments and technological ideas in the real economy. Here, young scientists and entrepreneurs have access to cutting-edge knowledge, modern technologies and necessary resources.
The Akim highly appreciated the work of Farabi Hub, noting that such projects give an impetus to the development of scientific and innovative potential of Almaty.
Then Darkhan Satybaldy got acquainted with the robots of the engineering competence center for industrial robotics and automation, established on the basis of the university. The robots presented at the center were developed by the leading German company KUKA and installed in KazNU. Among them are two industrial robots working with crystals based on artificially created lithium triborate used in advanced industries such as optics and electronics. KazNU is one of the few world centers that have mastered such technologies.
In addition, the engineering center provides a unique platform for startups to study, demonstrate and test the concepts of robotization of technological processes. The center is aimed at training professional personnel within the framework of the Industry 5.0 concept, as well as providing services for automation and digitalization of production.
The akim also got acquainted with the activities of the robotics center, where students not only master theory, but also work with future technologies. The center includes five innovative platforms based on modern production processes and artificial intelligence. Each platform is a complex designed to work with intelligent robots and simulate real production processes. The KazNU Robotics Center is an important practical platform for future engineers and scientists.
During the visit, Darkhan Amangeldyuly got acquainted with the construction of new academic buildings. Three seven-storey buildings with a total area of 32 thousand square meters. The meters will include faculties and branches based on KazNU. The new buildings will include classrooms, lecture halls, a library, scientific laboratories, conference rooms, recreation and discussion areas.
During the visit, Darkhan Satybaldy also received information about the activities of the Kazakh-Chinese joint laboratory "Remote Sensing Technologies and their Applications", established jointly with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It uses advanced methods of satellite and geospatial analysis using remote sensing. Scientists are analyzing such phenomena as climate and environmental changes in Central Asia, drought, land degradation, water scarcity and a decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea. The main goal is to create a scientific platform for assessing the state of the environment and preparing predictive models.
Unlike traditional research centers, the laboratory uses multiplatform processing technologies, combining satellite images, ground measurements and data obtained from drones. This allows not only to predict natural processes, but also to identify key factors affecting the environmental situation in the region.
Akim also visited the supercomputing center, operating on the university's premises. This center expands the capabilities of IT and artificial intelligence specialists and promotes the training of qualified personnel. The supercomputer not only increases the efficiency and accuracy of scientific research, but also significantly reduces the time it takes.
The supercomputer includes application software for complex processing of genetic data: from preprocessing sequences to genomic chain analysis. This is especially important for scientists working with genetics, as it simplifies and speeds up the process of genomic research.
The performance of the supercomputer is 2000 teraflops, which makes it the most powerful not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the whole of Central Asia. It is one of the 600 best supercomputers in the world. The system architecture is based on Intel and NVIDIA processors, and its power exceeds that of a typical modern PC by 10 000 times. It is capable of solving problems in just one hour, whereas ordinary computers would need to perform the same tasks for decades.
Darkhan Satybaldy highly appreciated the success of KazNU, and also emphasized the innovative potential of the university. He noted that in the future, the akimat will support innovative projects aimed at the development of national science.
