Natural and Technogenic Risks in Urban Areas

As part of the 11th Sustainable Development Goal – Sustainable Cities and Communities, an open curator’s hour was held among 4th-year students of the Natural and Technogenic Risks program. The topic of the session was: “Natural and Technogenic Risks in Urban Areas”.

The purpose of the event was to deepen students’ understanding of the specific features of natural and technogenic risks in the context of urbanization, as well as to explore ways of assessing and preventing them.

The open session was conducted in the format of a round table. Students discussed the following issues: air quality and the urban heat island effect; earthquakes and the resilience of urban infrastructure; the impact of transport and industry on the environment; water scarcity and natural disasters.

Based on the overall discussion, students highlighted five key proposals necessary for building a “Safe and Sustainable City”:

  1. Development of environmentally friendly transport;
  2. Expansion of green areas;
  3. Strengthening seismic safety in urban planning;
  4. Efficient use of water resources;

Promoting public ecological culture.

The open curator’s hour was held at a high level with active student participation. During the event, students freely expressed their views and offered scientifically grounded and practical ideas for the sustainable development of urban areas.
