Under SDG-2: Scientific Seminar on “Identifying Soybean Varieties Resistant to Fungal Diseases through Genetic Research” Held

6 october, 2025

On October 2, 2025, at 11:00, the Department of Botany and Agroecology of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology hosted a research seminar under SDG-2 (“Zero Hunger, Food Security, and Sustainable Agriculture”). The speaker was U.S.-based Professor Rustem Maratovich Biyashev, PhD, Research Manager, School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Virginia Tech (USA). Title: “Identifying Soybean Varieties Resistant to Fungal Diseases through Genetic Research.” Venue: Room 214.

The seminar covered the identification of genetic markers of resistance, QTL mapping, SNP/SSR-based screening, and the integration of phenotypic assessment with molecular datasets. Participants discussed marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, and practical pathways for incorporating these tools into national breeding programs. Faculty members and doctoral students met with Prof. Biyashev, attended his lecture, and explored opportunities for joint research and internships.
It was emphasized that soybean is currently widely used as one of the largest sources of protein feed for animals and as an important source of vegetable oils.
