Today, together with a group of Chinese students, we visited a concert at the Central State Museum of RK in Almaty. We listened to a musical program where kui compositions were performed. Students became very interested: “What are these?” After the concert, we had a conversation with them, and teachers explained that kui is a Kazakh folk song accompanied by traditional instruments such as kobyz or dombra. Kui compositions profoundly reveal history, myths, nature, and philosophy of the people. Each kui has its own name and storyline, which is transmitted through music, making it a form of “encoded” culture.
