Scientists of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences Completed a Research Internship at Rakuno Gakuen University (Japan)
From October 15 to 24, 2025, scientists from the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University completed a scientific and academic internship at the Laboratory of Remote Sensing of Environment, Rakuno Gakuen University (Ebetsu City, Hokkaido, Japan).
The internship program consisted of meetings with various research groups at Rakuno Gakuen University to discuss topics such as database development, laboratory and observatory operations, and ongoing research in environmental monitoring and natural hazard assessment.
During the visit, the Kazakh scientists presented their projects “Development of a Regional GIS for Monitoring and Assessing the Outburst Hazard of Glacial-Moraine Lakes in the Eastern Ile Alatau”and “BR28713751 Development of a complex risk management system for the most hazardous moraine lakes in the Ile and Kungey Alatau ranges river basins” in order to receive expert recommendations from Japanese colleagues on improving the application of remote sensing and geographic information system technologies. The discussions contributed to identifying promising directions for integrating satellite data and spatial analysis into hydrological risk studies.
The internship also included hands-on training in satellite data processing, field monitoring methods, and hazard modeling, as well as an exchange of best practices in glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risk assessment and mapping.
At the conclusion of the program, both sides discussed opportunities for long-term collaboration and the implementation of joint research projects in the fields of remote sensing, climate risk assessment, and sustainable environmental management.
