Earth — Our Common Home: The Culture of Environmental Responsibility
On November 5, 2025, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an educational event titled “Earth — Our Common Home: The Culture of Environmental Responsibility,” organized by the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science as part of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 13 — “Climate Action.”
The purpose of the event was to foster students’ ecological awareness, enhance their understanding of global and local climate challenges, and explore the spiritual and ethical dimensions of caring for the environment.
Students of the 3rd year majoring in “Religious Studies” (Kazakh group), as well as the faculty members and doctoral students of the department, took part in the event.
Among the organizers were Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor N.Zh. Baitenova;Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Professor K.M. Bishmanov; Candidate of Philosophical Sciences Associate Professor Zh.U. Kantarbayeva; Head of Research Practice, Acting Professor, Associate Professor M.R. Baltymova; and 2nd-year doctoral students of the “Religious Studies” specialty.
During the discussion, participants examined the global consequences of climate change, the role of faith-based perspectives in environmental protection, and the importance of nurturing a sense of moral responsibility toward nature. The Islamic tradition’s emphasis on harmony with creation and responsible stewardship of the Earth was also highlighted.
Students shared proposals for promoting ecological values in everyday life, supporting sustainable technologies, and encouraging responsible environmental behavior.
Events like this one strengthen young people’s commitment to sustainability, nurture moral and ecological consciousness, and reinforce the university’s contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
